THE RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS (RCIA)

BECOMING CATHOLIC

Welcome! We’re glad that you wish to learn more about becoming Catholic or about the Catholic faith.

The normal process for becoming Catholic is through RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). This process consists of different stages:

  • Inquiry: A time to become acquainted with the Catholic Church and to hear the good news of Jesus Christ; it is a time to look within at one’s life story and see connections to the Gospel. During this period, some may decide to go to the next phase, while others may feel they are not yet ready. A person’s choice at this stage or at any stage should be made in complete freedom.
  • Catechumenate: at this stage, one sincerely desires to become Catholic and enter into the Church. During this period, the initial conversion is deepened; the person comes to know more deeply the love of God in their own lives and in the Church.
  • Purification: occurring during the Church season of Lent, this is a more prayerful period, as one prepares to become Catholic, with prayers offered for them at Mass, and other prayers that lead them closer to God.
  • Sacraments of Initiation: celebrated the night before Easter Sunday, one becomes Catholic through Baptism, and completes the initiation with Confirmation and the Eucharist.
  • Mystagogy: a new Catholic reflects on what he or she has just gone through and looks to the future as to how he or she can now live more deeply as a Catholic and share the gifts received with others.

CATHOLICS WHO WOULD LIKE TO RECEIVE ALL THE SACRAMENTS

Some Catholics have been baptized but not yet received all the sacraments. They participate in the same instruction and process as non-Catholics so as to see the whole of the faith and prayerfully grow as a disciple of Jesus.

FACILITATORS

A team of instructors help lead those interested through the process of coming to know and love Jesus and His Church and all that He teaches.
